FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
VSC PARTICIPATES IN DISTRICT 211 2ND ANNUAL GEMS EXTRAVAGANZA
BUFFALO GROVE, IL (February 21, 2012) – As part of Veterinary Specialty Center’s (VSC) on-going commitment to educating others about veterinary medicine, they participated in District 211’s 2nd Annual Girls in Engineering, Math and Science (GEMS) Extravaganza held on Saturday February 11, 2012 at J.B. Conant High School.
“We do it because it’s exciting to meet the girls who are interested in specialized veterinary medicine. We enjoy talking to them and providing answers to their questions,” stated VSC veterinary technician, Carolyn Stasiak.
The event is sponsored once a year by District 211 as part of the Northwest Suburban Education to Careers Partnership’s (a partnership consisting of Districts 211,214 and 220) Career Advisory program. GEMS provides an opportunity for fifth and sixth grade girls and their parents to discuss careers in the fields of engineering, math and science with female role models from the industry. During the event the girls and their parents are invited to communicate with professionals in each industry and participate in hands-on, interactive activities. Along with this, the district provides an informational section for parents on how to prepare their daughters for courses in high school, college and related careers.
“The Career Advisory program is a broader focused program which provides speakers, Career Treks (career-related field trips) and assessment to high school student in all different career areas. VSC has hosted Career Treks for several of our schools over the past couple of years and we appreciate their participation,” stated J.B. Conant High School’s career advisor, Jacquelyn S. Menich.
