Cardiology

Dr. Wessberg is a national leader in the field of veterinary cardiology who regularly contributes to veterinary textbooks. She takes the time to research and understand every possible ramification for each treatment or procedure she recommends to her patients. One of her most valuable assets is her ability to communicate with pet owners so they can better understand the quality-of-life issues attached to the life-saving treatments she can offer. This allows every client to make the best decision for his or her pets.

Understanding each pet owner
"Each patient and each pet owner is different. Some pet owners are in such an emotional crisis when they're animal is sick that they just want you to take control of the situation. Other times, I educate the pet owner thoroughly so they can understand what I'm doing and make good decisions."

Love of animals
"The most obvious answer to why I enjoy being a veterinarian is that I love animals, but that’s not the only reason. I enjoy the challenge of solving a problem and, hopefully, being able to make the pet and their family feel better, or at least more comfortable. Medicine can be complicated and veterinary medicine is even more so, because animals can’t tell you what’s wrong, when it started, where it hurts."

Inspiring case
"I treated a cat with heart and liver failure that seemed very unlikely to survive. The owner wanted me to fight for the animal's life, and so I did. The cat remained in the hospital for three weeks, mostly in an oxygen cage. Eventually we found a balance and the animal went home. Today, the animal is healthy and off medication. It was an amazing recovery that reminds me to never lose faith in a patient."
