Critical Care

After treating a police dog in Lansing, Dr. Payne chose to specialize in emergency and critical care.  He fell in love with the fast pace, high intensity and exciting nature that each critical care case demanded.  He prides himself on his ability to pay attention to detail and react quickly to the needs of his critical care patients.

Communicating with Clients

"When communicating with clients, I put myself in the position of the client and their loved ones.  I communicate with them as a person, not just their doctor, and I explain every detail from start to finish.  By doing this, I feel that I am better able to understand where my clients are coming from and how they are feeling."

One of My Most Inspiring Cases

"My first independent case in intensive care was my most inspiring.  It was a police dog that was presented for Gastric Dilation-Volvulus (also known as bloat).  The patient was very unstable.  Getting the patient through surgery and five days of aftercare gave me a sense of pride and proved that I had picked the right path for my veterinary career.  It was also very inspiring to see the out pour of support from the Michigan State University community, the Lansing community and the Lansing police department."

The Best Experience in the World

"The best experience in the world is watching a veterinary student use the information they have gained in the classroom in a “real world” setting, putting two and two together.  It’s amazing to see their faces light up when they understand the application of what they have learned."

 Philosophy of Patient Care

"I treat every patient with the exact same intensity and attention to detail and I understand that it is often the little details that make a big difference.  By applying these philosophies, I can better understand the human/animal bond which allows me to exceed my client’s expectations and provide great medical care.
