Veterinary Specialty Center’s Externship Program is designed to give veterinary students hands-on experience in a high-volume, high-quality specialty hospital setting. Students will have exposure to several specialties, including surgery, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, clinical pathology, radiology, dermatology and rehabilitation medicine. Students may also choose to rotate with a specific specialty.
Student rotations are approximately 2 weeks long and the extern is expected to work approximately 40 hours a week. While on rotation, the student can expect to work with the attending doctor on history-taking, physical examinations, treatment plans and special procedures such as surgery and endoscopy. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the extern will also be expected to attend rounds with the attending doctor, rotating interns, and/or residents 3-5 days a week. A grade will be provided at the end of the rotation, if required by the extern’s academic institution.
