Dr. Kelsey Jung discovered her passion for medicine after she received a “doctor’s first aid kit” at a young age. As she got older, she became the go-to dog and cat sitter for the pets in her cul-de-sac. She realized that she enjoyed her time more when it was spent around animals. In high school and college, she enjoyed science and math classes the most, so pursuing a career in veterinary medicine seemed like the best choice.
How did you become interested in emergency veterinary medicine?
I first was drawn to emergency medicine as a veterinary technician prior to veterinary school. I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the shifts. In veterinary school, I joined the student chapter of the Emergency and Critical Care Society and realized I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the wide variety of cases that present on emergency. From chronic illness to life-threatening conditions, there is never a dull moment in emergency medicine. I feel it is important that I guide and offer support to owners during the stress of an emergency.
What is your philosophy of patient care?
I strive to provide compassionate and comprehensive care to all of my patients. I realize the power and importance of the human-animal bond especially during times of stress. Educating pet owners so they are able to make informed decisions is a large component of my role in their pet’s medical care.
What are some of your biggest challenges in emergency medicine?
One of the biggest challenges in emergency medicine is when a patient presents to the hospital already very injured or sick. Sometimes they are too ill to recover and we have to help the owners through difficult decisions.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I spend my time with my fiancé and our cat, Zoey. I have had her since veterinary school and enjoy snuggling her every day after work. She is also the best yoga-buddy and will often do her own stretches on the mat. I love hiking and backpacking and also enjoy photography and traveling with friends and family.
