With almost a decade of experience in emergency medicine, primarily at Veterinary Specialty Center, Dr. Ryl brings real-world knowledge and leadership to the ER. He exemplifies calmness when faced with difficult cases, and enjoys the unpredictability and challenges that come with each new patient. He takes pride in his ability to communicate with pet owners toward a good outcome, and values the relationships he builds with clients and their pets.
How did you become interested in emergency veterinary medicine?
I chose emergency medicine because I love the challenging and unpredictable nature of emergency medicine. You never know what will walk through the door, so you have to be prepared for anything.
What inspires you?
I recently treated a beautiful ten-year-old Doberman. Unfortunately, after a great deal of work and lengthy treatments, we lost the dog, but I was left feeling inspired by the owner, who is the director of a school of architecture. Although he is a busy man, he was tireless in his support of his beloved animal. The power of that bond between man and dog is beautiful.
What is your philosophy of patient care?
Vigilant monitoring and reassessing of a patient is very important to patient management, but so is communication. By listening to an owner’s concerns and educating them on their pet’s condition, it not only puts them at ease, but they are more able to process and accept our instructions, which vastly improves recovery.
My cat had vomited and was experiencing difficulty with her hind legs. I have had her over 13 yrs, and was scared for her. This occurred early on a Friday morning. Dr. Ryl examined her and did blood work. Fortunately, the "episode" was short lived and Trilly was back to normal. Dr. Ryl was great with her and took alot of time explaining what may have happened to her (mini-stroke). He also thoroughly explained the results of the blood work. The compassion shown at VSC is wonderful. ~ John
