Arterial Catheters

Veterinary Specialty Center - IV Catheters

In the more critical cases, an arterial catheter (a thin, hollow, tube) is placed into the artery to more accurately measure blood pressure than with a blood pressure cuff. The arterial catheter allows us to measure and monitor the arterial blood pressure continuously and note changes second by second.

Catheters may also be used to get repeated blood samples to assist in the continued monitoring of oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood. Arterial catheters are beneficial in cases of low blood pressure, high blood pressure, any case where the blood pressure is changing frequently due to the surgical procedure or underlying disease process, cases with primary heart disease, cases with lung disease or surgery involving the chest cavity, or any case where it is important to know the direct arterial blood pressure.
