Prevention of acute pain from becoming chronic pain

Veterinary Specialty Center - Anesthesia and Pain Management

There are protocols designed to prevent acute pain from becoming chronic pain. A multimodal approach including nerve blocks/epidurals, the use of constant rate infusions of pain medications, and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or steroids, or gabapentin may be utilized in cases of moderate to severe injury/pain. Aggressively managing acute pain can prevent the development of chronic pain. In some cases, your pet may need to be on pain medications for several weeks.
