Wound infusion catheters

Wound infusion catheters are used for postoperative administration of local anesthetics (amputation, thoracotomy, mastectomy, extensive mass removal). Wound infusion catheters allow administration of local anesthetic drugs either continuously (lidocaine) or by intermittent injection (bupivacaine) for an extended duration of time. The catheter is sometimes left in place for up to 72 hours to allow continued blocking of the local nerves.
