Veterinary Medicine is a second career path for Dr. John Vietti. He found his way to veterinary medicine because his wife is a veterinary technician. This field has been both rewarding and challenging and he loves that there is always a new area in which to grow and develop.
Get to Know the Expertise, Skill, and Heart Behind VSC
What sparked your passion to focus on emergency medicine?
I became a paramedic in my 20s. The local community college had a one-semester EMT course and from there I became sponsored by a local EMS department. It was a part-time position but definitely shaped how I handle emergencies. As I got into veterinary medicine, I knew this was an area where I could thrive.
What are some of the biggest challenges in your area of expertise?
We often meet people and their pets in the midst of very difficult moments. Having tough conversations without having built a previous rapport can be challenging. There are some very emotional moments in this work.
Is there a particular case that has inspired you?
One of my own dogs had diabetes and developed an auto-immune disease. He had a long and difficult hospitalization and was cared for by a team of exceptional doctors. That experience has given me a valuable perspective of what it felt like to be on the other side of the conversation. It keeps me grounded in how I communicate during emergencies.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my wife Veronica and our dogs. I also enjoy woodworking and spend a fair amount of time building ramps and agility equipment for dogs.
