Veterinary Internship and Residency Programs at Veterinary Specialty Center

Our Passion for Teaching

Veterinary Specialty Center has been a leader in veterinary care and education as one of the nation’s oldest independent specialty practices. Alongside our compassion for animals, we’re deeply committed to sharing our knowledge by training the next generation of veterinarians and specialists.

What Is a Veterinary Intern?

When veterinarians graduate, they can either go straight into practice or continue learning through internship programs. Internships provide young, licensed veterinarians with hands-on training from board-certified specialists and experienced emergency veterinarians.

After completing an internship, veterinarians can choose to:

  • Join a primary care practice
  • Move into emergency medicine
  • Pursue a residency to become a board-certified specialist

At VSC, we offer two types of internships: rotating and surgical.

  • Rotating interns work with our emergency team and rotate through our various specialties for a well-rounded experience.
  • Surgical interns receive focused training in surgery after completing a rotating internship.

We call our interns "house doctors," and many residents who work with us began as interns in these programs.

What Is a Veterinary Resident?

Residents are licensed veterinarians who have completed internships and are selected from a highly competitive applicant pool. Only a small number of candidates are accepted into these programs.

VSC offers residency programs in surgery, internal medicine, radiology, and critical care. Residents receive advanced training, handle complex cases, and supervise interns. They also participate in daily rounds, assist with journal discussions, and support our emergency and specialty teams.

As part of their program, residents conduct research and publish an article in a respected journal. After their three-year residency, they take board exams through one of the following:

  • American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS)
  • American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM)
  • American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR)
  • American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care (ACVECC)

Once they pass, they become board-certified specialists in their field.
