My father is a large animal veterinarian, and growing up I fondly remember going on farm calls with him in his work truck with the windows down, smelling freshly cut alfalfa fields, and watching him heal so many animals. Getting to play on farms and help him with dystocias and surgeries were some of my favorite experiences. Seeing sick, suffering animals recover into healthy, happy patients, along with witnessing how much fulfillment he got from his work, was what probably inspired me to explore my own path in this career.
Surgical oncology probably interests me the most. Surgery is my primary interest, but I also enjoy understanding the mechanisms of cancer and determining whether, for example, a tumor should or should not be removed based on anatomy and disease processes. I think it is a great combination of surgery with a touch of medicine and oncology as well.
